Written for trumpet and piano.  This piece actually has two themes, the first introduced in the piano, while the trumpet enters with the second theme.  They seem to be unassociated both rhythmically and harmonically, although the impression is given that they inadvertently work together.  As the piece progresses the two instruments grow closer in their collaboration until by the final variation, they have become a unit.
