Trumpet Concerto in Eb with CD - Hummel
The Trumpet Concerto dates from 1803, written in Vienna. It was a time in Hummel's life when he taught pupils up to ten hours a day, trying to grasp elusive financial stability. He would then compose largely at night, sometimes until daybreak, where he would write pieces to further his studies, or compose his rare commissions. Just a few months after the premiere of the Trumpet Concerto he received his first steady job in a court appointment.
Much of the music of this time period was written without articulation at all, leaving to the performer details of the playing style. The performer must remember that this is classical music and that the instrument originally written for it did not have the volume that today's trumpets can produce.
The concerto requires a great deal of attention to technique. Play within your abilities. This is a concerto to show off the technical and lyrical abilities at the same time. Have fun!
