More About Us

Karen was born in Malawi, but moved to South Africa at a young age. Her love of music and flair for instrumental playing began early (on the good old recorder) and progressed quickly to flute and piano. She attended The Pretoria High School for Art, Ballet, Music and Drama, then attained a BMus degree at Pretoria University. Whilst completing her studies she joined the S. A. Police Band, touring the country and covering much of the wind band repertoire available. A fairly constant need for an ad hoc 2nd flute player in the Orchestra of the State Theatre in Pretoria also ensured her a broad knowledge of the symphonic, operatic and ballet repertoire. Karen has spent the past 15 years passing on her broad knowledge and passion for music to children. She has taught all the components of music education, including individual instrumental tuition to students at two of the top private schools in Pretoria. This period in her life has broadened her musical expertise still further, to include a knowledge of the marimba (xylophone) and djembe drum, two very popular instruments in Africa. "Arts and Culture" (components of music, dance, drama, art) has become a popular all encompasing subject in SA schools and holds her in good stead to be able to give advice in this area.

Billy was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He started playing cornet at the age of nine, but very quickly realised that the bigger instruments were the way forward. Moved to tuba at the age of 14 he has never looked back, playing in various brass bands throughout the UK. His family moved to South Africa in 1983. He joined the South African Air Force Band where he stayed for 6 years. He then moved to the S.A. Police Band where he played both Euphonium & Tuba for 4 years. Here he met and married Karen. In 1993 Billy was appointed Principal Tuba of the Orchestra of the State Theatre in Pretoria, where he remained for 7 years. His next position was Principal Tuba for the Johannesburg Philharmonic. Billy has played with Pavarotti, The Three Tenors, Chris de Burgh and many more besides. He has a passion for music which borders on the out of control. In June 2008 he re-located his family to New Zealand and very quickly saw a demand for the supply of sheet music which he hopes to fulfil with his normal passion.
Billy was also an agent for many classical musicians in South Africa and considers the highlight of his career to be, booking the orchestra for Nelson Mandela's 85th birthday party.
